Denny Walters

A 1990 Crater High graduate, Denny was a three time state place finisher at the Oregon State Wrestling Tournament. In 1990, his senior year, he was the 115 lb. State Champion with 11-3 decision over his opponent Colin Abbott of Hermiston. Dan Speasl, former Crater High wresting coach, cross country coach and Athletic Director said this when asked about Denny Walters, “Denny was one of the toughest kids I ever had a pleasure to coach. Some of his matches at the state tourney provided some lifetime memories for Crater nation. His work ethic was second to none.  When I was Cross Country coach he came out to run to make himself better, and he brought teammates with him.  Amazing kid and he continues to give back to the sport of wrestling”.  When Denny was asked about his memories at Crater he told us, “The time I spent wrestling at Crater is full of good memories but what really sticks out is the time I have spent coaching and developing relationships with the athletes that have come through the program. So many of them have gone on to do good things in wrestling and in life and I am grateful to have been a part of that. Now, coaching the little guys is definitely a different challenge but no less rewarding. We have a special group of young athletes involved in Junior Comet wrestling including my own sons. I cannot wait to see what they will bring to this sport as they grow.”

After graduation from Crater, Denny attended Southern Oregon University where he wrestled his freshman year.  Denny coached wrestling at Crater High School from 1993 to 2017.  He Coached wrestling At Scenic Middle School from 2014 to 2017.
