A 1998 Crater graduate, Caryn played basketball and soccer and she was a four-year varsity player in both sports. Caryn was a four year starter in basketball at Crater and only missed one game. The 1994- 95 season was Caryn’s freshman year and was also Coach Heard’s first year and only year Crater finished with a losing record at 5-17. Caryn’s legacy started that year and Crater High School Girls Basketball won the next three Southern Oregon Conference titles and in 1998 became the first girls’ basketball team south of Eugene to ever play for a state title. Caryn was the team captain for 3 years. For the next three seasons Caryn’s teams would lose only 3 conference games and would win a total of 65 games. She played in front of several sold out gyms, including over 5000 people in the 1998 state title game and the first ever televised game played in by a Crater team.

“From the minute I saw her in the spring of her 8th grade year at Hanby, I knew we had a center piece to build around. She was tall, athletic and tough. Her basketball skills needed some work, but her competitiveness and toughness is what would become infectious as we tried to turn our program into the type of program that could compete at the state level year after year,” states Coach David Heard.

While Caryn was not the most talented player ever to play at Crater she was probably the most important piece in what became a known school for girls’ basketball and that still holds today. Who would have thought that this rough, athletic kid from Hanby in 1994 would have so much to do with how Crater Girls Basketball would evolve.

Caryn could score, rebound and could defend every position in basketball. Her most important asset was her ability to make everyone around her better. She pushed everyone to compete at the highest level and would never back down from anyone. She holds many school records including: 3rd All-time in scoring; 4th All-time in rebounding; 1st All-time in Frosh rebounding; 3rd All-time in Soph rebounding; 3rd All-time Frosh steals; 4th All-time in Soph blocked shots and 5th All-time Frosh blocked shots. She was named Honorable Mention All-Conference her freshman year; 1st Team All-Conference her Sophomore year; 1st Team All-Conference her Junior year; 1st Team All-Conference and Honorable Mention All-State her senior year.

In soccer, Caryn was the most valuable player in 1996, 1997 and 1998 and earned 1st team All- Conference player all three years. She was voted Goalie of the Year in 1996.

Caryn attended Howard College in Big Springs Texas, Texas and Wesleyan University in Fort Worth, Texas and in 2018, Southern Oregon University. Caryn has worked for Jackson Care Connect Community Outreach and in 2016 to present she works for Addictions Recovery Center (A.R.C.) as a Community Response Supervisor. She also sits on the Board of Directors for Jackson County Community Service Consortium. Caryn lives in Central Point and has two children, Mason McLane 10 and Michael McLane 6.
