A 1975 Crater graduate, Wendie DeMott Kellington was a very active student-athlete, participating in gymnastics and track.  She remembers Crater High School as a special place to grow up.  Wendie tells us, “Crater provided as much opportunity as a kid was prepared to take.  And that opportunity was never attended by the oppressive academic pressure now featured on many high school campuses.”

Upon graduation, Wendie was named 4^th Congressional District Scholar (by John Dellenback) and received various gymnastics and track awards.

Wendie enrolled at Southern Oregon College (SOC) in 1975 and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Political Science.  She attended the University of Puget Sound School of Law completing her law degree in 1983.  She began her professional career as the number two Jackson County attorney in 1984.  From there she became the Jackson County Counsel (Assistant County attorney); and the Oregon Land Use Board of Appeals (Referee, then Chief Referee).  Leaving Jackson County, she began work for the large firm of Schwabe, Williamson & Wyatt in Portland.  In 2001, Wendie opened her own law firm, Kellington Law Group “a very small boutique law firm of me + 3 lawyers, plus a full-time legal assistant.”

Her involvements and accomplishments are many including, Co-Chair 2019 Conference on Homelessness in Los Angeles; American Bar Association (ABA) Keynote Speaker Mid-Year Annual Meeting, April 2018; frequent national, state and local speaking engagements on airspace, drones, land use law, homelessness and SMI (severe mental illness); 23 years+ on faculty of ABA “Land Use Institute” held annually throughout the USA and is a nationally recognized expert in solving the scourge of homelessness.

Wendie is a member of the Oregon Legislative Workgroup on drones and airspace and on the Board –Association for Unmanned Vehicles Systems International (AUVSI). She is on the FAA Advisory Committee for Radio Technical Commission for Aeronautics (RTCA) Special Committee 228 (Minimum Operation Performance Standards) Re: transitioning commercial drones to and from Class A airspace and was invited to attend NASA Ames Observer (2017) computerized simulation of drones through Class A airspace with LAX air traffic controllers at Ames.

“For fun,” Wendie tells us, “I love athletics – I still love to swim – bike – run (the thrill of the triathlon is amazing).  But running is my favorite thing to do (if it is just me); I love being outside and seeing how far I can go or push – depending on the run.  I have run ultra-marathons (35 and 50 miles); many, many marathons and even more half marathons and some of the shorter distances too; as well as having participated in dozens of triathlons of all distances where the run was the best part.”   She is a four-time Ironman Triathlon participant – age group winner Lanzarote (Canary Islands) and qualified Ironman HI (Kona).
