A 1964 Crater High graduate, Darryl participated in football, basketball and baseball, earning ten varsity letters and a baseball scholarship to Oregon State University.  He was a first team All-Conference basketball player and two time first team All-Conference baseball player while at Crater. He was also a member of the National Honor Society.   He was a three year letterman at Oregon State University at one time held the home run record for the Oregon State baseball team.

Darryl graduated from OSU in 1969 with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Industrial Arts.  He returned to Crater High School as an industrial arts teacher and spent the next thirty-one years in School District 6.  In addition to his teaching, he coached football, girls’ basketball, wrestling, track and softball.  He was the elementary athletic coordinator and advisor to the Vocational & Industrial Club of America.  However, the involvement in junior athletics is where Darryl made his niche.  In 1984, Darryl, with his guiding and determination was instrumental in founding the Junior Comet program.  He was relentless in obtaining use of facilities while organizing programs for the youth of our communities.  His goal was to provide an opportunity to participate in athletics for both boys and girls ages 6-12 with emphasis on enjoyment, fun, sportsmanship, responsibility, social development and equal participation. Darryl tells us “I was blessed to be hired as a teacher and coach in District 6.  I can honestly say that none of my time in the school district was anything other than superb.  At the point in time when I was not able to demonstrate and show techniques to the extent I think a coach needs to, I still wanted to help further kids’ involvement in athletics.  In regards to that goal, I feel that I have been true to myself, and it has been my way to give back to this School District for all that it has given me.”

Over the years, thousands of young people have participated in the Junior Comet program, playing flag football, volleyball and basketball.  It has been Darryl’s leadership and tenacity that has kept the program operating for 33 years.  In addition, the Junior Comet program now provides scholarship money thru the Crater Foundation to virtually all graduating seniors who participated in the Junior Comet program as young people in our community.   Darryl was inducted into the Crater High Athletic Hall of Fame in 1996.

Darryl is married to his wife, Pamela, and they live in Central Point.  He has two daughters and several grandchildren.
