Karen Walters

Junior High School Teacher and Crater High School Coach

This former Teacher is Karen Walters a long time teacher and coach in School District #6.  Karen graduated from Southern Oregon State College with a bachelor’s degree in education and began her teaching career at Sweet Home High School.  After 2 years at Sweet Home, in 1974, she became a physical education teacher at Scenic Junior High School.  She spent the next 30 years in School District #6 teaching physical education at Scenic and coaching volleyball at Scenic and Crater High School and coaching track at Scenic.  Karen also helped advise the backpacking Karen Waltersclub at Scenic.

When asked about some of the highlights while working in School District #6 Karen stated, “Ah! The laughter  —  always the laughter! Everyday there was a guarantee of something to share laughter over.  Great friends on Staff, great kids in class and the hope that lives are improved by your presence!  What a way to earn a living.”

After her retirement in 2004 Karen became very involved in the community.  She volunteer’s in schools, the judicial system and human services.  As you might have guessed most of her volunteering is in kid-related areas.  She spends many hours volunteering for CASA (court appointed Special Advocates; CRG (citizen review board) reviewing foster care cases; 1st grade classroom helper; and SMART Reading.

Karen tells us she does some traveling, lots of reading, dog walking and enjoying family and crafts.

Karen and her husband Robert (a retired para-medic and firefighter for Jackson County Fire District 3) live in Medford and both are enjoying retirement.   They both enjoy the outdoors and love to ski and hike in their free time.  They have 2 grown boys, Brice, age 25 and Brody, age 22 and let us not forget Karen’s dog Millie.

Karen is another in a long line of outstanding retired educators from School District #6 who have made a difference in countless young peoples lives and we applaud her for that.
